Issued in 1912, this Mozambique definitive stamp represents the transitional period following the fall of the Portuguese monarchy and the proclamation of the Republic in 1910. Originally designed with the portrait of King Manuel II, engraved by Domingos Alves do Rego and printed by Casa da Moeda de Portugal, the issue was later overprinted diagonally with the bold red “REPUBLICA” to reflect the new regime. Rendered in violet by typography, the stamp shows the young monarch framed by laurel motifs, a classic symbol of sovereignty and legitimacy. Measuring 24 x 27 mm, with perforation 11½ x 12, it carries the denomination of 2½ Reis, a value commonly used for everyday correspondence in the colony. This issue is catalogued under Michel MZ 118, Stamp Number MZ 114, Yvert et Tellier MZ 120, and Stanley Gibbons MZ 162, and is part of a wider series that remains highly regarded among collectors of Portuguese colonial philately. The REPUBLICA overprints are historically significant, as they symbolize the dramatic political shift in Portugal while continuing the circulation of monarchic stock. Examples of similar overprints have appeared in major auctions, consistently drawing attention due to their aesthetic quality and historical resonance. Estimate "$15 – 25". Condition: Hinged with paper remnants and crease, otherwise intact with visible overprint, good collector’s example.
