Issued November 7, 1881, these engraved definitives form part of Guatemala’s celebrated Quetzal in Oval series, produced to mark the country’s membership in the Universal Postal Union. The design depicts the resplendent quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird and enduring symbol of liberty, perched upon a classical column within an ornate oval frame. The set offered here includes the 1 centavo in black and green (Scott 21, Michel GT 21, Yvert 22, SG 21) and the 2 centavos in brown and green (Scott 22, Michel GT 22, Yvert 23, SG 22). Both are finely printed by line engraving and perforated 12, measuring 22 x 29 mm. These early UPU-era issues are among the most iconic of Central American philately, combining national symbolism with high-quality printing that rivals contemporary European colonial designs. Collectors prize these stamps for their historic and cultural resonance, as well as their beauty, with the quetzal motif continuing to define Guatemalan philately into the 20th century. Estimate "$150 – 220".
