This original 1934 cover, franked with a 10 sen blue stamp from Japan’s 1926 “Scenery” definitive series, showcases the iconic Nagoya Castle (名古屋城), a powerful symbol of feudal Japan’s architectural grandeur. The stamp, printed in typography on granite paper and watermarked with Type 4 wavy lines, measures 26 x 22 mm and features a comb perforation of 13½ x 13. Issued on July 5, 1926, this was among the first rectangular-shaped definitive stamps released in Japan, highlighting famous landmarks and national heritage sites in celebration of modern postal reform and reduced overseas rates. This particular envelope was cancelled in KINSEN, a Japanese port city, and sent aboard the S.S. Resolute during its famous 1934 world cruise. A large commemorative black cachet at the bottom left bears the ship’s name and cruise year, adding a maritime historical layer to the philatelic item. The envelope is addressed to New Jersey, USA, with a faint purple kanji marking “米國” (“America”) and fine period calligraphy in brown ink. The letter was likely carried as part of the commemorative mail delivered during global voyages of prestige ships—a custom popular among both collectors and the elite traveling class. The featured stamp is listed in all major catalogs: Michel JP 179, Scott JP 196, Yvert et Tellier JP 193, Stanley Gibbons JP 243, and Sakura JP 215. Estimate "$70 – 100"
