Issued in November 1895, this rare ½ cent stamp from the Wuchang Treaty Port features a bold red surcharge in English over an earlier definitive design from the first local issue. The stamp was lithographed by the Shanghai Lithographic Society and printed in brown, with no fixed perforation standard, leading to slight variations in tooth measurements. The original design includes avian motifs and agricultural elements, emblematic of the region’s economy and aesthetic during the late Qing Dynasty. The overprint, applied to reflect postal rate adjustments, is particularly striking in its vivid red tone, and its English inscription testifies to Wuchang’s international postal presence during the treaty port era. It is listed under Scott WU 32, Michel CN-WU 22A, and Stanley Gibbons CN-WU 43. Condition: Mint never hinged with full original gum, excellent color saturation, and clean perforation. Estimate "$70 – 85".
