This striking 4 centime stamp block originates from the 1903 issue of the French colonial “Navigation and Commerce” series, overprinted for the Sino-French post office in Canton. Printed by the Imperial Printing Office in Paris using typography, the design by Louis-Eugène Mouchon features allegorical figures symbolizing commerce and colonial power. The original violet-brown and grey-blue tones remain vivid, particularly in the crisp block of four examples presented here. Each stamp bears a bold "CANTON" overprint in black, along with a surcharge in Chinese characters indicating its use within this specific Treaty Port jurisdiction. Measuring 20 x 24 mm and perforated 14 x 13½, these stamps were printed on grey paper and belong to the definitive daily issue line widely used throughout the French Indochina colonial network. The stamps are catalogued as Michel FR-IC B19I, Scott FR-CAN 17, Yvert et Tellier FR-CAN 19, and Stanley Gibbons FR-CAN 19. Their subject matter connects to colonial trade and classical European iconography, encapsulating France’s cultural messaging during its imperial expansion into East Asia. Condition Mint never hinged block with full original gum and strong color retention, light natural paper toning on reverse. Estimate "$140 – 180".
