This 3 cent stamp from the 1912 “Coiling Dragon” issue was overprinted with red vertical Sung-style characters reading 中華民國 (Republic of China), symbolizing the transition from Qing dynasty to the early Republic. The dragon design, engraved by R. A. deVillard, remains from the imperial era, but its new overprint marked a bold shift in identity. Printed by the Custom Statistical Department in Shanghai and Waterlow & Sons Ltd., the stamp is ungummed, imperforate with varying perforation, and has no watermark. A crisp cancel and clean margins define this used example. It is catalogued as Michel CN-IM 97, Scott CN-IM 149, Yvert et Tellier CN-IM 86, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 195, and China Stamp Society CN-IM 187a. Estimate "$85 – 110"
