Issued on 6 March 1957, the very day Ghana declared independence from British rule, this commemorative stamp sheet celebrates a pivotal moment in African colonial history. Formerly known as the Gold Coast, the British colony transitioned into the sovereign nation of Ghana, marking the first sub-Saharan country to gain independence in the 20th century. The full sheet consists of 60 engraved stamps printed in dark purple, each bearing the image of Queen Elizabeth II and a scene depicting key national industries such as mining and rail transport. The inscription “GOLD COAST / GHANA INDEPENDENCE / 6TH MARCH 1957” clearly commemorates this transitional event. Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. Ltd., the stamps are watermarked with the Multiple Script CA crown motif (upright) and perforated 11½ x 12. Though used (as evidenced by select cancellations in the lower rows), the sheet retains strong visual appeal and historic resonance. Catalogued as Michel GH 10, Scott GH 8, Yvert et Tellier GH 4, Stanley Gibbons GH 175. Estimate "$45 – 70".
