Issued during the period when South Africa was a dominion within the British Empire, this 1954 wildlife stamp sheet reflects both colonial governance and national identity. The complete uncut sheet features 240 mint stamps depicting a lioness with cubs, a motif linked to Kruger National Park and South Africa’s rich fauna. Each stamp is denominated ½ penny (½d) and printed in deep blue-green using photogravure by the Government Printer in Pretoria. Designed by H. Kumst, the issue bears bilingual inscriptions in English and Afrikaans—“South Africa / Suid-Afrika” and “Postage Revenue / Posgeld Inkomste”—and carries a watermark of multiple Springbok heads in upright position. Perforation is 15 x 14. The full sheet includes marginal control marks and positioning arrows, and remains in pristine condition with original gum and no hinge marks. Issued during British colonial rule, this item serves as a visual and material record of South Africa's philatelic identity before it became a republic in 1961. Catalog numbers: Michel ZA 239, Scott ZA 200, Yvert et Tellier ZA 201, Stanley Gibbons ZA 151, South African Stamp Catalog ZA 150. Estimate "$60 – 80".
