This 1949 Chinese tax stamp block features a red surcharge of 2 dollars Gold Yuan overprinted on a 50 dollar blue transport design, originally part of a fiscal issue repurposed for postal use. Printed via lithography, the design depicts symbolic modes of modern transport, including trains, ocean liners, and aircraft, representing the infrastructure aspirations of post-war China. This variant, Type I, is identified by the small “2” numeral and a distinctive “Y” at the lower right of the surcharge. Issued ungummed with variable perforation, the stamps are catalogued as Michel CN-IM 986I, Scott CN-IM 915a, Yvert et Tellier CN-IM 749, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 1127, and China Stamp Society CN-IM 1309. Offered here in two mint never hinged blocks of four, both fresh with strong impressions and excellent centering. Estimate "$70 – 90"
