This 1946 block of four stamps from the Republic of China (Taiwan) represents the first Shanghai overprint in the Martyrs Issue series and features a new 5 Dollar surcharge printed over the original 200 Dollar denomination. Designed with the portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a central figure in modern Chinese history, the stamp was printed by Dah Tung Book Co. using a combination of gravure and typography methods. The overprint reads "Restricted for Use in Taiwan," reflecting the transitional political and postal environment in the aftermath of World War II as Taiwan reintegrated into Chinese control from Japanese occupation. The stamp measures 23 x 26 mm and is printed in olive green on unwatermarked paper with varying perforation. It is catalogued as Michel TW 24, Scott TW24, Yvert et Tellier TW 40, Stanley Gibbons TW 21, and China Stamp Society TW 25. Issued in a print run of 5,000,000, the issue is part of a wider commemorative series honoring martyrs of the republic. The block is mint never hinged, well centered with fresh color and clean margins. Estimate "$95 – 120".
