China 1938, rare group of eight mint never hinged $5 stamps featuring Dr. Sun Yat-sen from the 2nd London Print series, notably lacking the usual vertical grill on the reverse. This printing deviation, considered a significant variety, highlights a rare occurrence in the production process of the gravure-printed series by the Chinese Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The stamp, issued in deep violet, measures standard definitive size and is line perforated 14. Originally intended to prevent stamp reuse, the grill is absent here, making these examples highly desirable among specialists. Cataloged as Scott CN IM 361 (no grill variety, unlisted in some catalogs), and related to Michel CN-IM 302, Yvert CN-IM 217, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 433, and China Stamp Society CN-IM 408. This group of eight is in excellent condition, with strong color, full original gum, and fine centering. Estimate "$300 – 380"
