Issued on May 12, 1937, to commemorate the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, this engraved 4 cent green stamp from Hong Kong forms part of a coordinated British Commonwealth omnibus series. Designed by De La Rue & Co. and printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., the horizontal layout features finely detailed portraits of the royal couple flanking the imperial regalia—orb, sceptre, and crown—beneath the coronation date. With perforation 11 x 11½ and printed on paper bearing the multiple script CA watermark crowned, this issue was produced as a memento of dynastic continuity following the abdication crisis of Edward VIII. The stamp shown here is in mint never hinged (MNH) condition, preserving its original gum, although a slight gum disturbance is visible in the upper back quadrant. Catalogued under Scott HK 151, Michel HK 136, Yvert 137, and Stanley Gibbons 137, it remains a popular item among collectors of British Empire commemoratives and royal portraiture.
