This high-denomination stamp from French Mandate Syria, issued in 1921, features the iconic Merson design originally used in metropolitan France. The central allegorical image by Nicolas Luc-Olivier Merson, engraved by Auguste Thévenin, depicts a reclining figure symbolizing France, flanked by classical agricultural and industrial motifs. Overprinted “SYRIE / 5 PIASTRES” in bold black type, the original 1 franc French stamp was revalued for Syrian usage under the “O.M.F.” (Occupation Militaire Française) administrative designation. Printed typographically in rich carmine-magenta and olive with clear detail and perforation 13½ x 12, this issue reflects the blend of metropolitan French design with colonial monetary and political realignment. The stamp is mint with original gum, lightly hinged, and exceptionally well-centered. It offers a refined illustration of the fiscal and cultural imprints of French policy in the Levant. Estimate "$45 – 65".
