An early example from the French military occupation of Syria, this 1920 stamp features the classic Type Blanc allegory—depicting Justice with scales and a cherub—overprinted O.M.F. Syrie and revalued to 25 centimes. "O.M.F." stands for Occupation Militaire Française, denoting French military authority during the transitional period following the collapse of Ottoman rule and preceding the League of Nations Mandate.
This piece belongs to the re-purposed French colonial stock adapted for use in the Levant. The overprint is applied boldly in black, with the surcharge centered over the 1c design in greyish green. An evocative artifact of post-WWI geopolitics, combining French iconography with Syrian postal sovereignty under military oversight.
Listed in major catalogues as Michel SY 135, Scott SY 73, Yvert FR-SY 48A, and SG SY 48B.
