This $2 stamp was issued in 1912 following the fall of the Qing Dynasty and features a black vertical overprint in Sung-style Chinese characters reading "Republic of China" applied to the original imperial $2 Flying Geese issue. Printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd in carmine and yellow using gravure, the design showcases a wild goose in flight against stylized clouds, a motif symbolizing peace and movement. Originally part of the 1906 imperial series, these stamps were repurposed with overprints during the early Republican transitional period. Printed on unwatermarked paper with variable perforations, this issue reflects both continuity and transformation in China’s postal history. Catalogued as Scott IM 176, Michel CN-IM 106, Yvert CN-IM 95, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 204, and CSS CN-IM 196. This postally used example is cleanly cancelled, with strong color and well-preserved edges, showing only minor wear typical of high-value field-used issues. Estimate "$340 – 400"
