Issued in 1912 following the founding of the Republic of China, this $1 stamp bears a black vertical overprint in Sung-style Chinese characters reading “Republic of China” applied to the earlier Qing Dynasty imperial $1 Flying Geese issue. Printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd in salmon and deep red via gravure for the Customs Statistical Department in Shanghai, the stamp’s imagery features a wild goose soaring among stylized clouds, symbolizing order and transition. With no watermark and variable line perforations, this overprinted series bridged imperial and republican eras while using existing imperial stocks. Catalogued as Scott IM 175, Michel CN-IM 106, Yvert CN-IM 95, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 204, and CSS CN-IM 196. This used example is well centered and displays a clear and attractive circular cancellation, retaining strong color and full design details in very fine condition. Estimate "$260 – 320"
