Issued in 1906 for the French Post Office in Tchongking, this 2 centimes stamp in brown features the Type Grasset design with an overprint reading “Tchong K'ing” and corresponding Chinese denomination. Printed typographically at the Imperial Printing Office in Paris on chamois paper, the stamp was designed by Eugène Grasset and measures 20 by 24 mm with perforation 14 x 13½. The motif reflects themes of goods and mythology, representative of French colonial aesthetics and commercial messaging in early 20th century China. Catalogued as Scott TCH 18 (Michel FR-IC B36VI, Yvert FR-TCH 49, Gibbons FR-TCH 18), this example is mint never hinged, with fresh gum and no visible faults.
