Issued in 1906 by the French Post Office in Canton, this 5 centimes green stamp is part of the Type Grasset series and bears a red overprint “CANTON” in Roman and Chinese characters. Printed in typography at the Imperial Printing Office in Paris and designed by Eugène Grasset, the stamp measures 20 by 24 mm and is perforated 14 x 13½. The allegorical image personifies commerce and maritime trade, aligning with French colonial iconography and the commercial role of the Canton office during the Qing dynasty. This specimen, catalogued as Scott CAN 34 (Michel FR-IC B60VI, Yvert FR-CAN 34, Gibbons FR-CAN 34), is mint hinged with full original gum. The gum side shows evidence of prior hinge removal and a reinforcement tab, but the front remains vibrant with sharp overprint and sound perforations. A collectible example of French extraterritorial postal operations in China. Estimate "$70 – 90"
