This scarce postal issue originates from the Netherlands Indies in 1902, during the colonial administration under Dutch rule, and features a striking black overprint "NED.-INDIË" applied on a 15 cent brown definitive stamp of Queen Wilhelmina from the Netherlands. The base stamp, portraying the youthful Queen within an ornate frame topped by a crown, was overprinted for use in the colonies where local postal needs demanded adaptation of metropolitan issues. The overprint was executed typographically, and this series is a well-known transitional issue marking the assertion of Dutch authority in Southeast Asia during the early 20th century. The stamp is perforated 12½ and printed using typographic methods on wove paper without watermark. Its cultural significance lies not only in its postal use but also as a reflection of imperial expansion and adaptation of European monarchic imagery to colonial contexts. With its limited print run and survival rate, especially in fine used condition, the issue is considered desirable among collectors of Dutch colonial philately. Referenced in Michel NL-Ind 20, Yvert & Tellier NLI 19, Stanley Gibbons NL-Ind 19, and Scott #1409, it compares favorably with other colonial overprints that often suffer from heavy cancellations or poor centering. Condition: Used, with visible circular cancellation. Centering fair, perforations complete, slight wear consistent with postal use. Based on market results for comparable overprinted colonial issues, values typically range between 25–60 USD depending on clarity of overprint and overall condition.
