This rare 2⁄5 centime stamp was issued in 1902 for use by the French Post Offices in China as part of the general "CHINE" overprint series applied to Indochina stamps. It features a black “CHINE” overprint and Chinese denomination in double figures, with a surcharge measuring 12 mm. The design comes from the Navigation and Commerce type by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, symbolizing themes of trade, goods, and classical mythology. Printed in red and black by typography at the Imperial Printing Office in Paris, the stamp measures 20 by 24 mm and is perforated 14 x 13½. Catalogued as Scott CN 18a (Michel FR-IC A1I, Yvert FR-CH 35, Gibbons FR-CH IND 1), it marks a transitional period when Indochina issues were adapted for French post offices in treaty port China. Stanley Gibbons now lists these separately due to their overprint specificity and value surcharges. This is a significant philatelic item representing the complexities of colonial-era postal administration. Estimate "$120 – 150"
