Issued in 1901 by the Sino-French Post Office in Canton, this 4 centimes stamp from the Navigation and Commerce series features the allegorical figure of Commerce, designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon. Printed in violet brown and blue on grey paper by the Imperial Printing Office in Paris, it was produced using typography and features the characteristic perforation of 14 x 13½. This particular issue bears a red “CANTON” overprint in double figures, denoting its restricted use in the treaty port. The stamp reflects France’s commercial presence in South China during the colonial period and is tied thematically to trade, goods, and classical mythology. It is listed in all major catalogs as Michel FR-IC B3I, Scott FR-CAN 2, Yvert et Tellier FR-CAN 3, and Stanley Gibbons FR-CAN 3. Condition: Fine used with light cancellation, well-centered and with strong color retention. Estimate "$30 – 40".
