Issued in 1901 for use in the French post office in Canton during the treaty port period, this mint never hinged block of 25 stamps features the classic “Navigation and Commerce” design by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, overprinted in red with “CANTON” and corresponding Chinese characters. The stamp, originally printed in yellow-green on unwatermarked paper, was produced by the Imperial Printing Office (Imprimerie Nationale) in Paris using typography. Each stamp measures 20 x 24 mm and is perforated 14 x 13½. Thematically linked to trade, colonial administration, and classical allegory, this overprinted issue served the needs of French merchants and residents during a high point of Sino-European postal extraterritoriality. The reverse shows strong, even gumming and full MNH condition with crisp, vivid color and sharp overprints. A premium multiple from the French colonial postal presence in South China. Scott FR CAN3.
