Issued in 1898 for use in the German post offices in China, this 5 Reichspfennig stamp features the imperial “Crown and Eagle” design, overprinted with the word “China” in black to signify colonial postal usage. Printed in opal green without watermark and using typography, the stamp measures 21 x 24 mm and has comb perforation 13½ x 14¼. Designed by Heinrich G. Schilling, it belongs to the first definitive German colonial issue in China, paralleling the Reichspost series but uniquely adapted for German-controlled territories in East Asia. Cataloged as Michel DR-CHI 2I, Scott GER 2, Yvert et Tellier DR-CHI 2(B), Stanley Gibbons DR-CHI 2, and AFA DR-CHI 2x, it is a historically significant piece from the early phase of German imperial expansion. Condition: Mint never hinged, bright color and full original gum, well-centered. Estimate "$60 – 75".
