Issued in 1898 for use in the German post offices in China, this 5 Reichspfennig stamp features the imperial “Crown and Eagle” design, overprinted with the word “China” in black to signify colonial postal usage. Printed in opal green without watermark and using typography, the stamp measures 21 x 24 mm and has comb perforation 13½ x 14¼. Designed by Heinrich G. Schilling, it belongs to the first definitive German colonial issue in China, paralleling the Reichspost series but uniquely adapted for German-controlled territories in East Asia.
