This early colonial stamp was issued in 1893 by the French postal service in Morocco and features the renowned “Type Sage” design, specifically the Type II variant. Depicting allegorical figures of Peace and Commerce united by a handshake above a globe, the design was originally created by Jules Auguste Sage and engraved by Louis-Eugène Mouchon. The black base stamp was typographed and later overprinted in red with “10 CENTIMOS” to reflect the Spanish currency used in Morocco at the time. This adaptation marks the first phase of French overprints tailored to local monetary systems. With perforation 14 x 13½, dimensions of 20 x 24 mm, and no watermark, this stamp is catalogued as Michel FR-MA 2II, Scott FR-MA 3, Yvert MA 3A, and Stanley Gibbons FR-MA 5. A lightly hinged mint example, it offers a glimpse into the early efforts of France to adapt its postal issues to colonial contexts while retaining symbolic republican imagery.
