This folded letter dated 9 February 1834 was sent from Chilly to a merchant named Cordelier Druard, négociant à Jeune. Written in brown ink on fine laid paper, the letter follows the classic folded format used before the introduction of envelopes and adhesive postage stamps. The contents are commercial in nature, referring to the payment of a sum in exchange for goods or services, and express the writer’s intention to settle a financial obligation. Signed “Gavet,” the letter conveys a tone of respectful urgency typical of early 19th-century business correspondence. The address panel is neatly inscribed and bears no postal markings or manuscript rate, suggesting either private delivery or local routing. A wax seal remnant is present on the reverse, and the paper is in very good condition with only a small tear near a fold. The document reflects the informal financial networks and commercial practices of provincial France during the July Monarchy period, illustrating the simplicity and elegance of handwritten business communication prior to modern postal regulation.
