Issued in 1949 during a period of hyperinflation, this mint never hinged block of four features the green $300 tax stamp surcharged in blue to $2000 for use as a definitive. Printed in gravure with perforation 12½ and measuring 26 x 23 mm, this ungummed issue was part of an emergency adaptation where tax stamps were repurposed for regular postal use. The stamp design incorporates multi-modal transportation themes including aircraft, locomotives, and passenger ships, symbolizing the reconstruction of national infrastructure during the final phase of the Chinese Civil War. Catalogued as Scott IM935, Michel CN-IM 1009, Yvert et Tellier CN-IM 782, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 1151, and China Stamp Society CN-IM 1336, this block is well-preserved in mint never hinged condition with strong color and crisp surcharge.
