This 1948 complete set from the Northeastern Provinces of China features overprints applied to earlier Sun Yat-sen definitives, reflecting the hyperinflationary currency adjustments of the late 1940s. Originally printed at the Central Printing Works in values ranging from 10 cents to 22 yuan, these issues were locally surcharged with new values from $1,500 to $500,000 Chinese dollars. The design centers on a formal portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, emblematic of revolutionary ideals and Chinese republicanism. The overprints include combinations of boxed numerals and provincial script in both black and red ink, with values such as $3,000 on $1, $10,000 on $10, and $500,000 on $22. These stamps were printed using gravure on unwatermarked paper, perforated 14, and measure 20 x 22 mm. This issue is a striking philatelic record of economic instability during the final phase of the Republic of China’s control in the northeast, just prior to the Communist takeover. Listed as Michel CN-IM-NE 57–64, Scott CN-IM-NE 53–60, Yvert et Tellier CN-IM-NE 61–68, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM-NE 70–77, and China Stamp Society CN-IM NE65–72. Mint hinged set with vivid colors and sharp overprints, condition Very Fine. Estimate "$120 – 150".
