Issued on April 10, 1948, this complete mint never hinged set of seven features emergency surcharges ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 Chinese dollars applied to earlier definitive issues portraying Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Each stamp bears a bold horizontal black or red overprint reflecting the extreme inflation of the late Nationalist period. Denominations include: $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $30,000, $50,000, $100,000, and $200,000. The underlying stamps were printed typographically by Central Trust and Union Press and show a variety of base colors including blue-green, red, carmine, and orange. All stamps are perforated (mixed gauges) and issued without gum. The set showcases the typographic overprint variants used to rapidly update postage in the midst of collapsing currency value. Featuring sharp impressions and strong color retention, this group is in excellent MNH condition. A classic representation of China's economic disintegration before the Gold Yuan reform.
