Issued in August 1946, this block of four belongs to the 3rd London Print of the Martyrs Issue, later overprinted for exclusive postal use in Taiwan. The original stamp, printed by De La Rue & Co. Ltd. in yellow-green via gravure printing, depicts Dr. Sun Yat-sen within a neoclassical frame flanked by columns and topped with the national emblem of the Republic of China. The overprint in black reads “Restricted for Use in Taiwan” and surcharges the stamp with a new denomination of 65 old Taiwanese cents, replacing the original 20 yuan face value. These overprints were part of the transitional postal arrangements following World War II and the retrocession of Taiwan to Chinese control. The stamps are perforated with varying gauge, typical of emergency or repurposed printings, and were issued ungummed. This MNH block preserves excellent centering, strong impressions, and clean margins. Catalogued as Michel TW 19, Scott TW 19, Yvert et Tellier TW 35, Stanley Gibbons TW 16, and CSS TW 17, this piece offers valuable insight into Taiwan’s early post-war philately and the administrative complexities of postal sovereignty.
