Issued in 1946 during the hyperinflationary period of post-war China, this mint never hinged block features a $20 red overprint in an octagonal tablet on the original 2-cent olive green “Martyrs of the Revolution” stamp depicting a bust of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Printed by Chung Hwa Book Company in Chungking using gravure printing on unwatermarked paper, line perforated 12½, this overprint was part of a wider emergency surcharge issue necessitated by rapidly devaluing currency. The block of fifteen shown here originates from the sheet margin, with all stamps showing the overprint clearly in fresh condition. Catalogued as Scott IM 717, Michel CN-IM 749, Yvert CN-IM 448, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 896, and CSS CN-IM 1093. The block is well preserved with full gum, excellent centering, and strong impressions throughout. Estimate "$140 – 180"
