Issued in May 1945 under Japanese occupation of northern China, this block of four mint never hinged 1 Chinese dollar stamps features the portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen with the regional overprint “Hwa Pei” signifying restricted postal use in North China. Printed by the Hsin Min Press in Beijing using lithography on various types of ungummed paper, this issue reflects the localized adaptations of the Nationalist definitive series during wartime fragmentation. The stamp is printed in brown and lacks any watermark, with a line perforation of 14. The overprint in bold black characters represents administrative control by the North China puppet regime near the end of World War II, during a time of shifting allegiances and political instability. This stamp highlights Sun Yat-sen’s enduring symbolic role, appropriated even under occupation for legitimacy. Cataloged as Scott 8N113, Michel JP-NC 377, Yvert et Tellier CN-N OJ125, Stanley Gibbons JP-NC 198, and China Stamp Society CN-IM NC283. The block is in very fine condition with full margins, sharp overprints, and fresh color throughout. Estimate "$120 – 150"
