Issued in July 1944 under the Japanese occupation of northern China, this 18 cent provisional stamp features a green gravure-printed design with a red overprint commemorating the fourth anniversary of the Wang Ching-wei collaborationist government in Nanking. The stamp was originally denominated $1 (CC95) and surcharged with the new value for continued postal use during a time of monetary instability. Perforated 12½ x 12 and issued without watermark, the stamp is part of a broader propaganda-driven issue incorporating agrarian symbols such as grain and the rising sun to legitimize the occupation regime. Catalogued as Scott NP14, Michel JP-NC 356, Yvert OJ99, Stanley Gibbons JP-NC 177, and China Stamp Society NC206, this example is well-preserved and clean, showing the bold overprint clearly and minimal surface wear.
