Issued on December 3, 1940, this 50 Chinese cents airmail stamp from the Republic of China features a dramatic landscape showing an aircraft soaring above the iconic Great Wall, symbolizing national pride and modern communication. Part of the Hong Kong Commercial Press print series, it was engraved by gravure on watermarked paper bearing the small multiple "YU" character. Listed as Scott C25, Michel CN-IM 363, Yvert PA25(A), Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 549, and China Stamp Society CN-IM AM33, this stamp is perforated in compound gauges between L11½–13.
This example is an unmounted mint block of 12 from the upper right corner of the sheet, with full original gum and marginal notations in pencil. The block is very well-centered, with uniform rich dark brown ink and intact perforations throughout. The design, combining traditional architecture and flight, was intended to emphasize China's modernization amid conflict. A superb and visually impactful multiple. Estimate "$130 – 160"
