Issued in 1919 for the French post office in Canton (Guangzhou), this typographed block of four stamps features the iconic design by Jules-Jacques Puyplat depicting a native woman of Indochina, overprinted with a new fractional value of 2 4⁄5 centimes in black, alongside red overprints reading "CANTON" and corresponding Chinese characters. Printed by Imprimerie Nationale in Paris, these stamps were part of a transitional postal series during the post–World War I economic adjustments, where fractional denominations were necessitated by fluctuating postal rates and exchange values in foreign post offices. The stamps are perforated 14 x 13½ and printed on brownish paper, retaining full original gum and post office freshness. Their rarity is enhanced by the multiple format and the clarity of overprints, making this an attractive item for collectors of French colonial and treaty port philately. Catalogued as Michel FR-IC B68I, Scott FR-CAN 66, Yvert FR-CAN 68, and SG FR-CAN 68. Estimate "$160 – 190".
