Block of four 1 cent ochre stamps from the 1912 Republic of China overprint issue, featuring the vertical overprint in Sung characters with the large form of "Kuo" (國) applied in vivid red. These stamps reuse the Qing Dynasty Coiling Dragon design, originally produced by Waterlow & Sons Ltd., and were overprinted by the Custom Statistical Department in Shanghai for use in the early Republic period. Printed using gravure with no watermark, they exhibit variable perforation and were issued on March 24, 1912. The stamps show clear color and strong embossing on the front, while the reverse reveals offset ink transfer from adjacent sheets—a known production artifact. The block is in mint never hinged (MNH) condition, though there is a slight natural gum disturbance on the reverse of the upper pair. The dramatic political and philatelic context—marking the transition from Imperial to Republican governance—enhances the desirability of this rare overprinted variety, especially in intact multiples.
