Issued in 1912 as part of the Republic of China’s first overprinted series, this 16 cent olive green stamp features the iconic "Jumping Carp" design with an overprint in regular script (Kai characters) reading "Republic of China." Originally printed by Waterlow & Sons Ltd in London using gravure printing, the issue marked the transition from imperial to republican postal authority. Listed as Scott 171, Michel 117, Yvert 104, Stanley Gibbons 226, and China Stamp Society 207, the stamp is part of the Regular-Writing Characters set which utilized remaining imperial stock with republican overprints. Thematically tied to aquatic symbolism and prosperity, the design is culturally significant and artistically refined. This mint hinged example retains full gum and shows strong centering and color, making it a collectible from the early Republican period. Estimate "$80 – 100"
