Issued in 1905 for the German Post Offices in China, this 2½ Chinese dollars stamp features the Germania design with a black overprint and denomination in dollars applied to the underlying German Reich issue (DR81Aa). Printed in green black and dark carmine by gravure at the Reichsdruckerei in Berlin, the stamp measures 37 by 27 mm and is perforated comb 14¾ x 14¼. It bears no watermark and was intended for use across German-controlled postal zones in China from 1905 until the cessation of operations in 1917. The design, part of the Germania series, symbolizes imperial strength and continuity, with this high denomination reflecting usage on heavier registered or insured mail. Catalogued as Scott CHI 46 (Michel DR-CHI 37A, Yvert DR-CHI 38, Gibbons DR-CHI 45, AFA DR-CHI 37), this mint never hinged example is in pristine condition with full original gum and sharp impressions, making it a valuable item among German foreign post collectors.
