This 4 cents on 10 pfennig stamp was issued in 1905 by the German Imperial Post Office for use in China, during the period of foreign post offices operating under extraterritorial rights. The original base stamp, printed in carmine red, depicts the allegorical female figure of Germania adorned with a laurel wreath and imperial crown, designed by Paul Eduard Waldraff. Overprinted boldly with "China" and the surcharge "4 cents" in black, this issue reflects the need to adapt German domestic values to local currency denominations used in China at the time. Printed via typography and perforated 14 x 14¼ (comb), the stamp lacks watermark, consistent with contemporary German colonial issues. This well-centered example retains full original gum on the reverse and displays an even impression of the overprint. It is listed as Michel DR-CHI 30, Scott DR-CHI 39, Yvert et Tellier DR-CHI 31, Stanley Gibbons DR-CHI 38, and AFA DR-CHI 30. The stamp is both a philatelic and historical artifact from the German colonial presence in Qing-era China. Estimate "$25 – 35"
