Issued in 1903 for French post offices in China, this 5 centime green and red stamp from French Indo-China features a bold black handstamped overprint reading “TCHONG-KING,” designating use in the city of Chongqing. The underlying stamp is part of the definitive “Group Type” series designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, printed typographically by the Imperial Printing Office in Paris. Measuring 20 x 24 mm with 14 x 13½ perforation, the stamp displays classical allegorical figures symbolizing commerce and French colonial reach. The overprint, together with Chinese characters representing value, marked these issues for use in semi-autonomous French postal agencies within treaty ports. The piece is notably cancelled on October 29, 1904, with a full circular strike clearly reading “CHONG-KING,” and additional Chinese characters in the date slug—a sought-after aesthetic feature in Indo-China postal history. The back shows light hinge remains and a reinforcement patch. This type is catalogued under Scott FR-TCH 4, Michel FR-IC B20V, Yvert 35, and Stanley Gibbons 4, and remains a notable specimen of extraterritorial colonial administration through philately.
