Issued in 1903 for the French post office in Canton, this 5 centimes stamp from the Navigation and Commerce series features a black “CANTON” overprint applied to the green and red typographed design by Louis-Eugène Mouchon. Printed at the Imperial Printing Office in Paris, the stamp shows allegorical figures representing trade and colonial presence. Perforated 14 x 13½ and measuring 20 x 24 mm, this block of four is mint hinged with vivid color, sharp impressions, and clean overprints. Catalogued as Scott FR CAN18, Michel FR-IC B20I, Yvert FR-CAN 20, and Stanley Gibbons FR-CAN 20, it is a scarce early 20th-century colonial multiple from the French postal operations in China.
