Issued in 1901 for the French Post Office in Canton, this 2 centimes stamp features a red “CANTON” overprint with Chinese denomination shown in double figures. Based on the Navigation and Commerce design by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, the stamp was printed in reddish brown and blue using typography at the Imperial Printing Office in Paris. It is perforated 14 x 13½, measures 20 by 24 mm, and was produced on chamois paper. The allegorical figures symbolize commerce and maritime trade, reflecting France’s economic presence in Qing-era China and reinforcing its colonial narrative through classical iconography. Catalogued as Scott CAN 1A (Michel FR-IC B2I, Yvert FR-CAN 2, Gibbons FR-CAN 2), this issue is an early and significant example from the series of French extraterritorial postal services in Canton.
