Issued in 1901 for the French Post Office in Canton, this 15 centimes stamp features a red “CANTON” overprint along with the Chinese denomination in double figures, applied to the Navigation and Commerce (Type Mouchon) design. Printed in purple and red using typography at the Imperial Printing Office in Paris, it measures 20 by 24 mm and is perforated 14 x 13½. Designed by Louis-Eugène Mouchon, the stamp showcases allegorical figures symbolizing commerce and maritime power, consistent with the themes of sales, goods, and mythology promoted through France’s overseas postal presence. Catalogued as Scott CAN 6 (Michel FR-IC B8I, Yvert FR-CAN 8, Gibbons FR-CAN 8), this issue represents a transition in French colonial imagery and postal operations in Qing China. Condition assumed to be unused with original gum unless stated otherwise. Estimate "$85 – 105"
