Issued during the first surcharge printing of the 1897 Qing Dynasty provisional issue, this 10 cent on 9 cent dull green stamp was part of an emergency revaluation series adapting imperial Chinese stock for new postal rates. The overprint was applied locally using black movable type on unused Coiling Dragon stamps, marking the beginning of modern Chinese philately. Printed by typography without watermark and perforated irregularly, this issue was a short-lived but essential response to the establishment of the Chinese Imperial Post. Catalogued as Scott 62 and Chan 62, this very fine mint hinged example shows clear overprint alignment, strong color, full original gum, and sharp perfs. It remains a cornerstone item in early Republican and transitional Chinese postal history. Estimate "$840 – 920"
