Issued in 1894 at the treaty port of Ichang during the Qing Dynasty, this lithographed block of six features the 2 candarin issue in red violet with central native script design flanked by corner swastikas, a traditional symbol of auspiciousness in Chinese iconography. Each stamp is boldly cancelled with a framed grid postmark dated "15 JUN 94", making this a desirable and well-documented example of treaty port usage. Lithographed by the Tsukiji Type Foundry Company in Japan, the issue was locally produced to meet postal demands of foreign residents and trading firms within the Yangtze River port city of Ichang. Measuring approximately 27 x 22 mm and imperforate, these stamps were gummed and intended for use on inland and foreign-bound mail. The overall condition is very fine with strong impressions and legible strikes, showing clear alignment of cancellation across the block. This piece offers exceptional insight into the autonomous postal systems operated in treaty ports prior to national consolidation. Scott YI3. Estimate "$475 – 550"
