This commemorative 24 candarin stamp from the 1894 Empress Dowager’s 60th Birthday issue, known as the first commemorative series of the Chinese Imperial Post, depicts a stylized Chinese junk under sail within a red ornamental frame. Issued on November 1st, 1894, this first printing is rendered in rose carmine on unwatermarked paper with a visible vertical mesh and a Yin-Yang watermark, though varieties exist. Designed by R.A. de Villard and printed lithographically by the Statistical Department of Customs in Shanghai, the stamp reflects China’s desire to modernize while honoring dynastic tradition. The maritime motif symbolized commerce, strength, and modern connectivity during a time of imperial reform and foreign pressure. Perforation is variable, typical of early Chinese philatelic issues. This stamp is listed under Michel CN-IM 15a, Scott CN-IM 24 (variant), Yvert et Tellier CN-IM 15, Stanley Gibbons CN-IM 24, and China Stamp Society CN-IM 30. Condition shows light postal use with a clear circular cancel and a visible horizontal crease, minor edge wear but overall intact example of a culturally significant issue. Estimate "$250 – 300".
